Reiki is a term that has become incredibly popular. For some, it’s an intriguing word with a mysterious meaning. For others, it’s a buzzword that seems confusing. For many people all over, Reiki is an integral part of their spiritual routine and self-care practices. So what exactly is Reiki, how does it work, and should you try it?
What is Reiki?
Reiki is an energy healing modality and therapy. It uses the flow of healthy, healing energy and interacts with the energy fields and centers in and around the body, known as chakras. The word “reiki” is a Japanese word. When broken down, “rei” means universal and “ki” means life force energy. Reiki was first developed by Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, who developed Usui Reiki Ryoho, a series of teachings. When energy gets stagnant or blocked in our energy centers (chakras), Reiki energy can help increase more flow of energy and remove blockages. Reiki energy is divine, universal light that helps fill our energy centers with more positive, healthy energy.
Reiki and our chakras
We all have multiple energy centers in our bodies, but the most commonly known energy centers are the seven chakras: the root, which sits at the base of our spine; the sacral, which is at the location of our pelvic bone; the solar plexus, which is around our stomach; the heart chakras, which sits in the middle of our chest; the throat, which rests at our throat; the third eye, which is found in between our brows; and lastly, the crown, which is at the top of our heads.
Energy moves and flows through all seven energy centers and sometimes, when a chakra is blocked, our energy can get pent up and get stuck. Reiki helps to alleviate the blockages and introduce more flow. Reiki energy can also remove any negative, stagnant energy that may have been picked up and stored at the various chakras as we journey through life.
How does one receive Reiki energy?
Reiki is performed by Reiki Practitioners, who have undergone training and the necessary experience to perform Reiki sessions. To become a Reiki Practitioner, a student must undergo a training and “attunement process”, per each level, where the Reiki energy is transferred by the Reiki Master to the student. Once the transfer and learning process is complete, a Reiki Practitioner can perform a Reiki session, where Reiki energy flows out from the Practitioner’s hands and at the various energy centers of a client’s body.
What happens in a Reiki session?
A Reiki session is most often hands-off, unless there is a pressing need for touch which is practiced at the discretion of both the client and Practitioner. If you are the one receiving Reiki energy, you will likely be seated or lying down in a comfortable position in a peaceful environment. You would close your eyes and either enter into a meditation or fall asleep. The Practitioner would then scan your energy centers to feel for blockages and tune in with their own intuition to feel for any messages. Practitioners will hold their hands over the seven energy centers, or chakras, for anywhere from 3-8 minutes. Practitioners might feel an array of sensations, such as heat, cold air, and receive messages about the patient’s concerns. The client may also experience similar sensations, feel release of stagnant emotions, and experience deep healing. A full Reiki session can last anywhere from 30-60 minutes.
Benefits of Reiki
While receiving Reiki energy improves the flow of circulation between our energy centers, it also creates space for good to come into our energy field. By removing negative energy and filling our energy centers with universal light, we can feel more relaxed, happier, and more positive. Reiki also aids in the natural healing process of our bodies and fosters a deeper connection with our physical bodies. It’s also been studied that receiving Reiki in certain parts of our bodies can assist in relieving any physical ailments, such as aches, pains, and trouble areas. While Reiki does not take the place of medical treatments, it can be used as a complementary practice.
Can Reiki be harmful?
Because Reiki is a universal light energy, receiving it can only cause good, not bad. Additionally, because receiving Reiki does not require any contact, the scope for harm is little to none.
Charging crystals with Reiki energy
Reiki energy can be used to charge the energy in almost anything that has life force energy. Gemstones have healing properties that help to balance our body, mind and soul. Each healing property is specific to the stone and can help to release blockage in our chakras. When a chakra is low in energy, high vibrational gemstones can help by providing healing. All of our Buddha Beads gemstones are charged by our Reiki Master Teacher (and co-founder) Bhav, as her hands act as a channel to enhance the universal healing vibrations in each stone.
Reiki is a gentle and loving technique rooted in divine healing. By adding a Reiki session with a practitioner that you feel connected and aligned with to your spiritual and self-care routine, you can form a deeper connection with yourself, your emotions, and your energy centers. More than anything, you become an active participant in your healing process.
